My friends, can you believe spring has sprung?! I’m still in a bit of shock as it felt a bit like winter might go on forever, but trust me, I’m beyond happy to welcome a new season!

This spring is particularly exciting as it marks the debut of a very special project I worked on more than a year and a half ago. I am thrilled to finally present to you…

I am so proud to share the new book, Decorating with Plants. Written by the amazingly talented horticulturist and San Francisco based plant designer Baylor Chapman, the interiors in this lovely tome were also styled by moi! Today I finally get to share a major sneak peek of this lovely book with you – just in time for plant season.

I had such an amazing experience styling the spaces featured in this book we covered a ton of ground. As you flip through its pages, you’ll find unique and creative ways to add plants to virtually every single space in your home (and you might recognize a corner or two from This Old Victorian!). From the entryway to the bedroom, the kitchen, to the bathroom, kids’ room and your home office – you will learn how to decorate with plants anywhere you can think of. Every corner of your house can in fact benefit from a plant – and this book tells you exactly which one to pick and how to help it thrive.

As a brown thumb myself, I was constantly getting new ideas and learning how I might incorporate more plants into our house – and actually not kill them for once! Decorating with Plants covers everything from Plant Care 101 to how to assess your home’s light conditions and tricks for keeping your plants alive while on vacay.

But the book also goes deeper, helping you determine everything from your personal plant style to how much time and money you want to spend on the plants. It really hones in on how to make houseplants work for you.

In addition to offering design and plant styling inspiration for every room in your house, Decorating with Plants also showcases profiles of 28 stunning plant varietals that I hope will finally break us all out of our fiddle leaf fig rut. I am particularly smitten with the Prayer Plant, but you’ll have to get a copy of the book to find out what it looks like!

This project was such a labor of love for all involved. From the photographer extraordinaire Aubrie Pick to all of Baylor’s amazing plant whisperers, everyone put so much into making this book come to life. I have to thank my partner in styling Kate Leonard for all her amazing work on this project. I couldn’t have done it with out her.

And seriously, as someone who can barely keep an air plant alive, this book is the guide you need, not only to fill your house with good lookin’ plants, but also to get them to thrive.

Decorating With Plants is officially available on April 2 but you can pre order your copy RIGHT HERE.

If you’re looking to add a little life to a room, the addition of houseplants is a wonderful way to do it. But rather than just slap something green into a container from the corner big box store, you can go next level with chic vessels. This week I’m partnering with Overstock.com to show how you can add greenery to your house (using some sneak peeks of our decorating progress as examples!). You may have seen how I transformed my outdoor space with Overstock earlier this summer. But Overstock is a treasure trove of pieces for every part of your house – from sofas to side tables, to houseplants! You can really dress up any part of your house with plants.

Continue to scroll to see how to style plants in your kitchen, living room, dining room and entry! I have to say, I love what adding some serious greenery did for each space.

Case in point, your bookcase. Rather than simply pot a plant in something generic, if you select planters with a style all their own, you can create a really stunning look. On Overstock I found gorgeous options in rich golden tones in various heights, that I paired with a trio of tabletop urns with more of an antiqued look. The combination adds both warmth and and cool visual interest. When filled with unique, personality-filled leafy green plants, suddenly your shelfie is packed with personality.

I love the look of a dramatic grouping of plants in a living room. It’s a great alternative to a bunch of random tchotchkes. Potting a gorgeous palm in an indoor plant stand kept it off the floor and helped ensure everything below didn’t blend into a giant green mass. Clean, classic black planters are always a timeless choice.

If you’ve got the space and height, an indoor tree is another great way to draws the eye up. I love the above tree’s tropical vibe. It’s a refreshing alternative to the now ubiquitous fiddle leaf fig.

I put the potted tree inside an oversized woven storage basket I found on Overstock to soften the look. Baskets are best the home accessory. I can never have too many. They serve a million purposes – holding blankets, hiding toys, and in this case holding plants. Overstock has so many options – you’re guaranteed to find one you’ll love.

The kitchen is another great place to mix the style, tone and texture of both planters and plants to create an eclectic look. Mixing concrete planters with iron and stone options make everything feel collected and special. And unusual plant shapes, grasses and ferns adds all great texture and visual interest to open shelving. I’m loving the little plant party happening in my kitchen space.

There’s something amazing about a major grouping of plants. Juxtaposing a classic pedestal entry table with an overflow of life is awesome way to make a statement in an entry. I’d been hunting for the perfect table for our bay window forever and the black round pedestal table I found on Overstock is just perfect.

I warmed up the space with a gorgeous cow hide rug. They’re really durable so perfect for high traffic areas. The one I found on Overstock by NuLoom has really stunning gold threading in it (see my instagram today for a closeup). I’m obsessed.

I love the look of throwing all caution to the wind and mixing and matching plants and vessels to your heart’s content. It gave my entry a chic jungle vibe. Trust me – it’s a thing.

Houseplants a great option for dressing a dining table. Often the spot for cut flowers, why pick something you have to replace weekly? I love the look of these architectural, modern concrete planters filled with a variety of funky eye-catching greenery.

There are a few key things to consider when selecting houseplants to greatly increase the likelihood of keeping them alive!

  1. What kind of light does the plant require? Plants that flourish in indirect light are often the most brown-thumb friendly.
  2. How much watering do they need? Plants that are really sensitive to moisture levels are often difficult to maintain. You want to look for hearty plants that can withstand getting watered once a week or so (if you’re as likely to forget to water a plant as I am!).
  3. What kind of pot and soil does a plant need? Some plants do better with a lot of drainage. Some plants need to fully dry out before their next watering. Seem need to set deep roots while others can do well in shallow soil.

Take the time to go to your local nursery and have a conversation if you’re unsure about what could survive in your house but don’t be afraid of flexing your green thumb. Houseplants literally bring any room to life.

Now that the days are a little longer, the sun a little warmer and blossoms are starting to pop, I suddenly have the urge to fill our house with all things green. While I’m certainly no green thumb, I have managed to keep this fiddle leaf fig tree alive for three years running (to learn how, click here)! And though I still love the little guy, options for spring greenery that go beyond the fiddle leaf feel fresh these days – say that 10x fast!

From bathrooms to bedside tables, bar carts to hallways, really any space can benefit from that punch of a pretty bit of greenery. Happy spring!

Move over fiddle leaf fig. There’s new cool kid in town and it’s a little prickly! Cactus are quickly becoming the house plant du jour and I’m on board (yes, even with having a one year old – when something hurts they learn quickly!).

I’m a big fan of any plant that looks super cool and sculptural and is really really hard to kill. I thought airplants would be easy. I was wrong. Cactus can live indoors or out. They can be tiny and displayed in multiples on a shelf, in your kitchen or bathroom. Or you can go big, buy a massive one and park it in a huge pot. Etsy is full of good pot options.

Cacti also come in a variety of shades and textures. You can really play with the visual you want. Some even flower – a lot! While I’m still trying to figure out both the layout and the light situation in our new house I think a cactus (or seven) will tide me over until I can go house plant crazy. If you’re into this idea as much as I am then you’ll love this entire blog devoted to cacti.

What do you think? Have you cultivated cacti in your home? Are you a fan??

When it comes to making a house a home, an often overlooked design secret is house plants! They truly do enliven a space, pun intended! And if there’s anyone who knows a thing or two about plants it’s Urban Jungle blogger extraordinaire, Igor of Happy Interior Blog. Igor has been a breath of fresh air from the moment he came on the design blogging scene. His casual European aesthetic is so inviting. I want to just move right into every space he showcases. Igor has also proven to be quite the savant when it comes to plants. I’ve somehow managed to keep two fiddle leaf figs and now a bevy of snake plants alive for over year, but when we move into the house I’m really going to have to step up my plant-life game. Thankfully Igor is willing to share some of his plant-whispering secrets with us today!

From Igor: Moving into a new place is exciting but it can be a tad scary too. It is like the beginning of an art piece where the artist finds himself in front of a gaping void. The empty canvas – as much as it offers a chance to create something unique and remarkable, it also carries the threat of failure and discontent. However, for us interior design loving peeps, this empty canvas is more of a chance than a threat, right? One easy way to bring life into a room and succeed for sure is by adding plants.

Plants have that unmistakable power to infuse life to any room. The dash of fresh green, the thriving power, the benefits for a healthy environment as well as their decorative abilities make them a popular choice for decorators and people who want to live healthy and stylish.

Choosing plants for a room can be challenging but it can be made much easier by simply considering a few points:

> Is your room well lit or rather shady? Choose your plants accordingly by picking either plants who love full sunlight or plants that thrive in shade or semi-shade like a rubber plant or a calathea.

> Is your room spacious or rather small? Choose either large statement plants or opt for small greens that you can group together. If your space is very limited think of a hanging plant instead.

> Are you easy going with plant care or does it scare you a bit? Here again, choose plants according to your preferences and lifestyle. Opt for low-maintenance plants like cacti, succulents or a philodendron if you do not want to turn into a plant mama. If you like to care for your plants and see them thrive happily ever after, go for any kind of plant that will make you happy.

Find the perfect plant friends for the new/old house is going to be quite fun. I see a ginormous fiddle leaf in my future, but who knows? Maybe I’ll throw a curve ball and do a banana leaf palm instead!

A green thumb is certainly something to be admired. I spent years barely being able to keep a succulent alive. Air plants – that don’t really need water – gonners. But spring is a great time to give houseplants another go! While cut flowers are always a yes, having a living thing around literally breathes fresh life into your space. I’ve now kept two fiddle fig leaf plants kickin’ for over two years {hallelujah!}, but I think I’ve found a new secret weapon for keeping plants happy – give them a gorgeous spot to hang out!

I’m officially obsessed with these seriously stylish plant stands from IVY MUSE.

TDC.Nightshade20 apartment34_plants5

Rather than having your snake plant tucked in a corner or your rubber plant just sitting on a shelf, these beautfiul powder-coated metal stands will make your house plants the star of your living space! I love the line’s geometric shapes, poppy colors ranging from electric blue to a gorgeous gray {copper is my fave obvi}, varying heights – perfect for creating a little living vignette!

These pieces are design and made entirely in Melbourne, AUS by a killer design duo Jacqui Vidal who sells unique art at Signed & Numbered, and Alana Langan whose online boutique Hunt & Bow is equally chic. IVY MUSE just released their second plant stand collection, Nightshade which adds more styles and colors to their mix of stands and offers a limited edition series beautiful wheelthrown pots to accompany them. I only hope these collections keep coming!

Sadly, it does not appear that IVY MUSE ships to the States. Anyone in Australia feel like sending us a little care package?!

The plant is back in the building {woot!} and we’re loving the extra life and greenery it brings to a space. Any greenery really opens the environment up and makes it feel more livable- makes sense, technically there are more living things in the room now! After I jumped on the Fiddle Leaf bandwagon, I’ve been wanting to add a new plant or two to the loft.

Thankfully, I’ve had pretty good luck in the houseplant department thus far {miracle!} and am happy to report, I haven’t had to bury too many green friends in the plant cemetery. Don’t be fooled, by no means am I a green thumb, but sites like my new favorite, The Sill, certainly help me feel more like an expert. They break down the care of the most popular houseplants {they even break down plants by personalities so that you can find the perfect plant for your lifestyle!} and are my go-to reference for the current or future plant lover.

In order to steer clear of the black thumb club, I make sure I’ve aced my one on one time with the employee at the gardening store before I even dare bring a plant home with me. There is something so depressing about watching the leaves on your plant turn yellow and then a whithered brown and feeling like you have no control over nursing it back to health. Isn’t it the worst feeling, ever?

We’re currently reading up on the care guides of these guys {The Sill offers PDF’s that you can download here!} because we want to bring some new life into the new office! Here’s a quick breakdown of our top picks:

apt34-houseplant-care

I vote for something like the Snake Plant which is cool and graphic, but it might be a good idea to have low maintenance guys around like cacti since we’re always running around and are likely to forget to water them! Oops. One thing for sure is that you don’t already, you must buy a Pothos for your home. It’s our go-to plant {besides our trusty Fiddle Leaf Fig tree!} and according to the plant experts, you can take a sledge hammer to it and it won’t die. We’ll see about that…
